Oomph Vs. POW – Let’s Break It Down By Hair Type

Not sure which LOHY. gel is right for your curls? You’re not alone.

One of the most common questions we get about our gels is: “Do I need Oomph or POW?”

They’re both brilliant gels—just a little different in what they offer your curls. So we’ve broken it down by curl type to help you work out which one will work best for your unique texture.

Keep in mind this is a guide. It’s totally normal to have more than one curl pattern on your head (yep, we see it all the time). So don’t stress about sticking to a rulebook—what matters most is what works for your unique curls. Mix, match, experiment… and have fun with it!

Oomph Hydrating Gel

Type 2: Wavy Hair

Go for: Oomph Hydrating Gel

Wavy gals, your hair tends to be finer and doesn’t need a tonne of weight to hold its shape. That’s where Oomph shines. It’s a lightweight gel that adds hold without the crunch. Plus, it boosts volume without weighing your waves down.

Use it on wet or damp hair and scrunch it in—hello beachy definition, goodbye fluffy flyaways.

💡 Pro tip: Pair Oomph with a curl-friendly mousse or foam like Chutzpah Volumising Foam for a bit of extra hold on humid days.

Type 3: Curly Hair

Go for: Oomph or POW—depending on your curl goals

You’ve got a bit more curl structure to play with, and you might want to switch it up depending on what your hair is doing that day.

  • Need soft, touchable hold? Go for Oomph.

  • Want defined, long-lasting curls that stay put for days? POW is your go-to.

If your curls are finer or prone to frizz, Oomph will keep them light and bouncy. If they’re thicker or you’re refreshing day 2+ curls, POW will give you that stronger hold and definition.

Mix-and-match is totally fine. We love a little Oomph at the roots for volume and POW on the ends for extra staying power.

Pow Strong Hold Gel

Type 4: Coily & Afro Hair

Go for: POW Strong Hold Gel

Coily textures usually need more control and moisture-locking power, and POW is made exactly for that. It’s a strong hold gel designed to keep definition in place without flaking or drying out your strands. Perfect for twist-outs, wash-&-gos, or setting a sleek style.

You’ll get serious hold without the crunch, and curls will stay put even in heat or humidity.

POW works best on damp or wet hair—just make sure to work it through section by section using your Flexi Brush.

Type 1: Straight Hair

Okay, technically not curly—but we see you!
Go for: Oomph (if you're chasing texture or volume)

Straight hair that needs a little texture, root lift, or grip for styling will love Oomph. It’s not sticky or heavy and won’t weigh down fine strands. Perfect if you're going for that tousled, "I woke up like this" vibe.

So, which one’s right for you?

  • Finer or wavy curls? Go for Oomph

  • Thick or coarse curls? You’ll love POW

  • In between? Honestly… you might want both. Your curl routine can change with the weather, your wash day, or just your mood.

FAQs – Oomph vs. POW

Can I use both gels in the same routine?
Absolutely! Lots of our curlies use Oomph at the roots for volume and POW through the mids and ends for hold. They layer really well together—just apply Oomph first, then follow with POW.

Will POW make my hair crunchy?
Not if you don’t want it to! POW gives a strong hold, but once your curls are dry, you can gently scrunch out any crunch (aka the cast) for soft, defined curls that still hold their shape.

Is Oomph enough for humid weather?
If your hair is fine or wavy, yes! But if you're battling frizz or high humidity, you might want to finish with a light mist of Hold-It Hairspray for extra staying power.

Can I refresh my curls with these gels?
You can! Just dampen your hair with water or your favourite refresh spray, then reapply a small amount of Oomph or POW. Start small—you can always add more.

Which gel is best for slick styles (like buns or ponytails)?
Definitely POW. Its strong hold and smooth finish make it perfect for flyaway-free slick styles that last all day.
