The Ultimate Winter Curls Survival Guide

July 15, 2024 | Louise O'Mullane

Winter can be harsh on your curls, just like summer environmental factors can contribute to dry, damaged and thirsty curls. Dry indoor air, cold winds, scarves, hats and the frequent use of extra heat to dry your hair fast can lead to dryness, frizz, and breakage. Knowing how to treat curly hair during the colder months is essential for maintaining healthy, bouncy curls.

Here are some important tips to keep your curls looking healthy and feeling hydrated this winter.

The Impact Of Winter On Curly Hair

Dry Air and Indoor Heating

The cold, dry air outside combined with indoor heating can strip moisture from your hair, leading to dryness and extra  frizz. When the air lacks humidity, it draws moisture from your hair core, making it brittle and prone to breakage.

Cold Winds

Not everyone likes to stay indoors in Winter and exposure to cold winds can damage the hair cuticle, causing it to lift and become rough. This makes the hair more susceptible to tangling and breakage.

Frequent Washing + Hot Showers

If you’re the type of person that loves a scorching hot shower over winter, you might want to think again if you want to keep your curls hydrated and healthy. Hot showers, (and I don't mean warm, I mean the kind of hot that turns your feet red!) are actually really bad for your hair, and your skin. In winter, you also might feel the need to wash your hair more often due to wearing beanies and being in warm environments. Frequent washing can strip natural oils from your hair, leading to dryness.

How To Treat Curly Hair In Winter

1. Deep Conditioning Treatments

Regular deep conditioning treatments are essential during winter. Use a rich, moisturising deep conditioner at least once a week to replenish lost moisture and keep your curls hydrated. Products like Drench & Quench curl moisture mask are loaded with hydrating ingredients, such as Aloe, Coconut Oil and Jojoba.

2. Turn Down The Heat

When it comes to heat, turn it down! Whether it's a hot shower, or your blow dryer on max, it's always best to use the lowest setting to avoid extra damage caused by heat. We know turning the heat up gets the job done quicker, but is it really worth damaging your curls? Opt for air-drying whenever possible to retain moisture in your curls and give them a break from blow drying.

If you MUST use extra heat, or just just can't deny yourself a scorching shower, make sure you’re using products to protect your hair, and follow up with moisturising masks for both your hair and body. For blow outs we recommend Atonic Thickening Spritz by O & M.

3. Use a Humidifier

Adding moisture to the air in your home with a humidifier can help combat the dryness caused by indoor heating. A humidifier helps maintain the moisture balance in your hair, reducing the risk of frizz and static.

4. Protective Hairstyles

Wearing protective hairstyles like braids, twists, or buns can help protect your hair from the harsh winter elements. These styles can protect your curls from friction from scarves and beanies, reducing tangles and breakage.

5. Satin or Silk Accessories

Switch to satin or silk pillowcases, scrunchies and overnight protection. Silk is much gentler on your hair (satin is a good alternative if silk is not in the budget) and they reduce friction preventing breakage and frizz compared to cotton or wool.

6. Hydrating Products

Use hydrating shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for curly hair. Avoid products with sulphates and drying alcohols, as they can strip moisture from your hair. Products like LOHY's Drench & Quench hair mask can provide deep hydration and nourishment.

7. Avoid Over-Washing

Try to wash your hair less frequently to preserve its natural oils. When you do wash, use lukewarm water instead of hot water to prevent further drying out your hair.

8. Seal in Moisture

After washing, use a leave-in conditioner or nourishing oil to seal in moisture. We’re a big fan of DIY so head over to our blog on how to create your own leave-in conditioner using Nourish & Flourish. A simple solution that provides the necessary hydration and protection for your curls.

Understanding how to treat curly hair during winter is crucial for maintaining its health and vibrancy. By following these tips and using the right products, you can keep your curls looking their best even in the harshest winter conditions.
