Whether you have Straight, Wavy, Curly, or Coily Hair, the battle for volume is real. Some hair types struggle to hold lift, while others deal with shrinkage, making length and fullness hard to maintain.

The key? The right techniques, lightweight (strong hold) styling, and a few game-changing tricks up your sleeve. Here’s how to build volume and keep your hair looking effortlessly full—without overloading it with product.

Type 1 Straight Hair

Straight hair often struggles with ‘flatness’, especially at the roots. The texture of straight hair is much finer than other hair types. The strands have a smooth surface and no visible waves or curls, and due to its smooth surface often looks glossy.

‘The trick to adding volume without making hair feel heavy is focusing on lifting the hair from the roots rather than coating strands in loads of product’.

Type 1 Straight Hair- How to build volume

Create Volume in Straight Hair

  • Start with a good foundation: Eliminate any grimy build up or grease by washing with a lightweight, volumising shampoo and conditioner.

  • Use Chutzpah Volumising Foam on damp hair to add texture without stiffness. Foams are often better on Type 1 Hair because they are super lightweight and won't weigh the hair strands down.

  • Using a Flexi Brush- brush the product through your hair to evenly distribute products, for volume, always brush away from your scalp and blow-dry upside down.

  • Volume + Root Lift Combs are perfect for adding height during styling. Their innovative interlocking prongs allows the combs to lift the hair and provides an extra-secure hold - ideal for that last 5 minutes of drying to maximise and SET volume. For an extra bit of lift, take sections at the roots and gently fluff.

  • Apply as needed - Hold-It Hairspray for that final, touchable hold without stiffness. Hold-It is strong, so remember, a little goes a long way!

Type 2 Wavy Hair

Wavy hair has built-in movement, but it can sometimes fall flat at the crown. The key is enhancing texture while keeping waves light and bouncy.

Boost your natural texture and enhance your Type 2 Wavy Hair

  • On clean, washed hair scrunch 1-2 pumps of Chutzpah into damp hair. This will immediately enhance any waves and provide hold. Make sure you scrunch product all the way to the roots.

  • Diffuse instead of air drying for more lift and definition. Upside down is recommended for extra lift.

  • Use your Gold Curly Hair Volume Root Clips at your roots while drying to create extra volume at the crown.

  • Shake it out—once dry, flip your hair upside down and give it a quick shake for natural volume and to scrunch out any crispy residue left from the product. The result- touchable wavy hair!

Type 3 Curly Hair:

Type 4 Coily Hair

Curly hair naturally has body, but volume can be lost if curls clump together or become weighed down by product.

Define Volume Without Creating Frizz

  • Apply Chutzpah to damp clean hair to define curls while adding weightless volume. Because Type 3 Curly Hair can handle heavier products, use a strong hold gel like Oomph or POW to ensure there is enough hold. Chutzpah alone, might not give you the lasting hold your curls require.

  • Diffuse your curls upside down (even for the first 5 minutes) to encourage lift while maintaining definition.

  • Use the Volume + Root Lift Combs to fluff curls at the roots without creating frizz.

  • Lightly mist Hold-It Hairspray to keep volume in place.

Type 4 Coily Hair

Coily hair has loads of natural volume, however, shrinkage can make it look shorter and more compact than it really is. The trick is stretching curls while keeping definition and bounce.

Enhance Volume & Manage Shrinkage During Styling

  • On clean damp hair, use a moisturising curl cream to give your coils an extra dose of hydration. Apply 2-3 pumps of Chutzpah to create soft, voluminous coils and then use a strong hold gel like POW for maximum hold. Rake the products through using a Flexi Brush or your fingers.

  • The Expand Your Curls Technique is another great option for creating volume, you can read a step by step guide here or watch the video below on how to perfect this technique for a function or night out.

  • Add Gold Root Clips at the roots while drying can stretch curls slightly, reducing shrinkage.

  • Banding method: If shrinkage in your hair is extreme, try sectioning hair into loose bands while drying to gently stretch curls. The banding method is an old technique that involves wrapping hair ties around sections of damp hair at regular intervals from root to tip, gently elongating the curls as they dry. This method is excellent for Type 4 Coily Hair because it helps create more length and definition without disrupting your natural curl pattern.

  • Finish with Hold-It Hairspray to lock in volume and keep curls lifted and add 1-2 drops of Hush Nourishing Oil to the palms of your hands and glaze over your curls. A quick scrunch will eliminate any 'crunchy' strands leaving you with soft, touchable curls.

  • Finally, use the Volume + Root Lift Combs to gently pick at the roots, lifting curls without disrupting their pattern.

No matter your hair type, volume is achievable with the right products, styling techniques and some handy tips from the experts.

Whether you're fluffing with a comb, setting roots with clips, or enhancing your natural curl pattern the key is working with your hair’s natural texture—not against it.
