Fine Curls, Big Impact: Maximising Volume In Your Thin Curly Hair

Fine Curls, Big Impact: Maximising Volume In Your Thin Curly Hair

Volume is in! And we are here for it!

Big, voluminous, barreling spirals that are equal amounts length and width!

Achieving this however, can be somewhat impervious. Thin curly hair can be one of the more trickier hair types to manage. Why? Because you’re not just dealing with a hair type, you’re also dealing with a hair texture!

The combination of texture and ‘type’ determine the way your hair will look, feel and last when styled throughout the day. Add some porosity challenges in there and you’ve got some big factors that will determine your hair's overall appearance.

Limp curls, lack of volume, and difficulty in maintaining structure and pattern are common challenges that fine/thin curly hair can have.

But don't panic! With the right combo (and amount) of styling products, and a bombproof technique, you can have beautiful, bouncy and defined curls that last all day.

Challenges Of Thin Curly Hair

Let's clarify: Thin curly hair is different to curly hair that is “thinning”. While fine hair is typically characterised by the thickness of individual strands, thinning hair relates more to the overall density of hair on the scalp. Thinning hair can be caused by many factors such as age, stress, diet, hormones and illness. You can read more about the difference between thinning hair and fine hair here.

Similar Care Techniques For Thinning & Fine Curls

Fine hair tends to be more delicate and prone to breakage compared to other hair types. It can also be challenging to style, as thin curls may not hold their shape well and can easily become limp or frizzy. Fine curls often lack volume, which can make the hair appear flat and lifeless. However, with the right products and a bit of technique, full, defined curls can be achieved really easily. Here’s how..

Create the illusion of Voluminous curls

Techniques To Avoid Limp Curls & Maximise Volume and Definition

To avoid limp curls and maximise volume and definition, consider the following techniques:

  1. Layered Haircut: A layered haircut can help create the illusion of volume by adding texture and movement to your curls. Ask your hairstylist for long layers that frame your face and enhance your curls' natural bounce. Read The 12 Commandments for Layering Curly Hair for tips and caring for layered hair.
  2. Diffusing: Use a diffuser attachment when blow-drying your hair to enhance your curls' natural volume and texture. Start by gently scrunching your hair with a microfibre towel to remove excess water, add your styling products, then use the diffuser on a low heat setting to dry your curls while maintaining their shape.
  3. Avoid Over-Handling: Fine curly hair is fragile, so avoid over-brushing or over-touching your curls, as this can cause breakage and frizz. Instead, use your fingers to gently separate and shape your curls while they're drying. A gentle shake is usually all that's needed.
  4. Use the Right Products: Choose lightweight, volumising products like Chutzpah Foam specifically designed for curly hair. Avoid heavy products that can weigh your curls down and make them appear limp.
  5. Hold the conditioner! We admit, it’s a normal part of a wash day routine to condition your hair, however fine, thin curly hair can end up being weighed down when conditioned. Opt for a cleansing shampoo that has hydrating properties (we recommend Nourish & Flourish) and use either a very small amount of conditioner to detangle or use a detangling brush under running water for best results.

Using Hairspray To Create The Illusion Of Voluminous Curls

Hold It Hairspray is our go-to product for fine curly hair. It provides lightweight hold and helps enhance your curls' natural volume and texture. To use, simply spray a small amount onto your hair while scrunching your curls with your fingers. This will help create the illusion of voluminous curls without weighing your hair down. You can also spray it under your top and bottom layers to boost volume from the roots.

Use K18 Or Protein Treatments For Thin Hair Types

Fine hair is more common in people with straight or wavy hair textures, as these hair types tend to be finer in diameter. However, fine/thin hair can also occur in people with curly hair, particularly those with a looser curl pattern, it is typically less common in Type 3 or Type 4

Treatments like K18 or protein treatments can help strengthen fine curly hair and improve its overall health and appearance. These treatments work by penetrating the hair shaft and repairing damage, resulting in stronger, more resilient curls that are less prone to breakage.

Fine curly hair is a versatile and beautiful hair type when cared for correctly. By using the right techniques and products, you can enhance your hair curls' volume, structure, and pattern, allowing you to make a big impact with your fine curls.

Remember, natural looks good on you!
